Of all the books I have read on stock and chart analysis, this one is by far the best! Not only does it give solid investing and speculation advice, but the information on reading, deciphering and analyzing the various chart trends and stock behaviors is invaluable. Immediately after I finished reading this, I went back through the high points to make sure I have the candlestick patterns and major icons down to memory. The great part about this book is that- not only is the information supported within the pages, but also I find the teachings in this book are bolstered when I go to analyze real stocks in everyday life. This book teaches you when it is a good time to look into buying, and more importantly- when to stay away from a stock. You will learn bearing and bullish patterns, along with trends that lend evidence as to where a stock might be headed.Do yourself a favor- buy this book, study this book, and use it to invest wisely!
A great introductory book for reading charts. Before reading this book, my only references for proper charting techniques came from Google search results. McAllen's thorough explanations from simple terminology to more complex concepts gave me the ability to sift through my prior knowledge and separate the good info from the useless. I am now more successful in my trades which can be greatly attributed to the diligence preached throughout these pages. 100% would recommend to beginner and intermediate traders alike.
I have been trading stocks for three years now...mostly based on fundamentals and I've been hit or miss on my picks. Decided to pick this book up and learn chart patterns and other TA techniques to improve my success ratio. This book did not disappoint one bit! The amount of information is kind of overwhelming...you may need to read it two or three times or take notes to fully absorb all the information, however, even with all the information you're taking in, the author does it in such a way that you don't get bored or constantly yawn while fighting off sleep. I read through it in about 4 days and when I finished, the first thing I did was start pulling up charts on my stocks and looking for recognizable indicators.I highly recommend this to anyone interested in learning to read, understand, and forecast charts. The only con is the example chart image quality is a bit on the fuzzy side so you have to squint to read some of the fine details of the charts, but that doesn't prevent you from reading the patterns and indicators.
I found this book very useful as an introduction to technical (chart) analysis for trading. I have read other investing books and often find that it just feels like the author is trying to sell you on their particular brand of strategy and/or use the book as a marketing tool for other investment products that they sell. Fred McAllen thankfully does not do that in this book. You really get a sense that the author is trying to cut through a lot of the BS noise that you get from these market pundits and sham educators and just provide a no-nonsense guide to basic chart analysis. Fred does plug is other books a couple of times, but their mention is minimal. It is worth noting that the book primarily uses candlestick chart patterns for analysis. So if you prefer other types of charts for analysis then maybe look elsewhere. Personally, I am a big fan of candlestick charts so I like it. He does also go a bit into using technical indicators such as moving averages. Overall the book does not go deep into other technical indicators. So if you would like to learn about others I would suggest looking elsewhere.Overall I felt that this book was an excellent basic-intermediate introduction to charting. My only disappointment is that it did not go into quite the level of depth that I was hoping for, but it is still a very good resource and I like the author's style.
The amount of valuable information in this book and Trading the Trends (Fred McAllen's other book) is simply amazing. After reading these books I realized that up until now I haven't been investing, but gambling. Both books have been thoroughly highlighted and dog-eared, and look like I've had them for a decade (I've had them for ~ a month). Implementing the strategies included in this and Trading the Trends have already made me exponentially more money than the books cost. Thank you, Fred McAllen!!!
I purchased the actual book after reading about the poor quality of illustrations in the ebook version. Unfortunately, the book has that printed-on-demand quality and the figures have major problems.- some unnecessary and amateurish pictures of clip art-quality (slightly deformed due to poor formatting)- the figures are overly pixelated due to poor resolution- inconsistency in charts presentation: some has volumes, some not- the candlesticks are hard to see- many figures have unreadable headings, so you do not see what stock you are looking at- you will be constantly squinting hoping that the lines of the charts will sharpen, but they won'tAgainst all this, the writing is clear and informative. McAllen is honestly trying to give you the useful basics of technical analysis without guiding you to a subscription only website. It is a good addition to my all time favorite on the subject "Secrets for Profiting in Bull and Bear Markets" by Stan Weinstein. This book is not aimed at traders or advanced investors, but has a target audience in small investors and recovering fundamental analysis addicts. I would highly recommend not to buy a stock without looking at the price chart as well.
This book provides tons of info and insights on analysis trading. It is a great building block of the craft. A must read if you’re new to day or swing trading using chart analysis.
I really enjoy this book and feel that it's well written. It provides some good detail without being overly complex. Ideally I think this book can be used in conjunction with other investing books in order to find entry and exit points for improved returns.
